The Legend
When Indra lost his kingdom he was told that if he drinks the Amurtham ( the Devine Nectar)he will be able to rule once again. There was huge war between Devas and Asurars and they
both started to dig for Amurtham in the Sea.They used ausing Mandramalai & Vaasuki, the snake to lure Amurtham out.But Vaasuki was tired and and began to give out poison.Vishnu
rushed over and drank all the poison till his noeck when is Wife Parvati rushed and stopped
him before his whole body could turn blue.Lord Siva then rested on his wife's lap in the
small village Surutapalli .The news was spread to the Devas, Brahma Vishnu and Saptarishis
and they came down for Dahrshan is when Naandi stops them because Lord Vishnu was taking
rest. When he was all better he was filled with extreme happiness and danced ("Ananda Thandavam").Shiva darshan was a Krishnapaksha Trayodasi (Stiravaram, Saturday). This is the Mahapradosham day. Pradhosham, generally, is a significant occasion observed with great
piety at all Shiva temples. It is beleived that Lord Siva willbe present in all Sivan
Temples dring Prodhosam hence it makes it the special day and time.

Holi

Holi
The festival Holi is celebrated as a symbol os triumph of good over evil and celebrated
around huge bonfires.Legend is that holi as in the rakshashi Holika was immune to
fire.Taking this as an advantage Hiranyakasyap ,her brother, wanted to rule the earth as God.Angered by Prahlad's devotion to Lord Vishnu he wanted to punish him by throwing into the fire by the help of his sister Holika. But the Lord punished Holika instead of Prahlad.
Yet another legend holds that Holi is the same as the female demon Putana, who tried to kill
the child Krishna by making him suckle her poisoned breasts. Krishna however, sucked very
hard and drained the life out of Putana. Popular legend adds that the body disappeared and
the cowherds of Mathura burnt her with an effigy. Since then, Mathura has been the main
centre for Holi.

breast milk. But baby Krishna sucked so hard that he sucked the life out of her.It wassaid
that her body was burnt in Mathura so Holi is celebrated there with more meaning.
Holi is usually celebrated in NorthIndia more than the South.People throw colored powder and
splash eash other with colored water pistols and have a lot of fun.At the end of the day
they have a great feast .
